The principle speakers and others at this conference represent the
wide range of areas of mathematics and computer science where Fred has
made a significant impact in the last thirty plus years. They
represent industry, higher education, and teachers. For example, Chuck
Biehl, from the Charter School of Wilmington, was a participant in the
very first DIMACS Teacher Institute, over ten years ago, and
represents all of the very best teachers and students who have passed
through these NSF funded Institutes, some of whom, like Chuck, work
with the current Institutes. W. Tom Trotter, Chairperson of the
Mathematics Department, started his career as a mathematician about
the same time as Fred. Tom's work in graph theory and partial orders
paralleled Fred's work. Peter Winkler at Bell Labs represents common
research interests, but also Fred's continued involvement with
industry. Fred's newest interest lie in the areas of biological
modeling and this interest will be represented by Ellis McKenzie from
the National Institutes of Health.
