BALTIMORE, MD, April 1, 2025 – Can we really trust AI to make better decisions than humans? A new study says … not always. Researchers have discovered that OpenAI’s ChatGPT, one of the most advanced and popular AI models, makes the same kinds of decision-making mistakes as humans in some situations showing biases like overconfidence of hot-hand (gambler’s) fallacy yet acting inhuman in others (e.g., not suffering from base-rate neglect or sunk cost fallacies).

United Airlines has suffered a recent spate of flight incidents. They range from a tire falling off an airplane on takeoff from San Francisco International, an engine fire on a flight from Houston InterContinental to Fort Myers, an airplane sliding off the runway at Houston Intercontinental and a hydraulic system failure on a flight from San Francisco International to Mexico City. To throw even more gasoline on the fire, this weekend an external panel mysteriously disappeared off a United flight. In all incidences, there were no fatalities or injuries.

BALTIMORE, MD, March 25, 2024 – Four INFORMS members have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Antonio Conejo is a professor in integrated systems engineering at The Ohio State University. Martha Grabowski is the McDevitt Distinguished Chair in Information Systems, Information Systems Program Director and professor of information systems in the Madden College of Business and Economics at Le Moyne College. Patricia Mokhtarian is a Clifford and William Greene Jr. Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Stephen Wright is a George B. Dantzig Professor of computer sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
